WHAT IS ICONIC NURSE NETWORK OUTREACH INC?

In September of 2021, I took my teenage son to the emergency room for abdominal pain and change in his appetite. We discovered he was having issues with gallstones. Together we decided to proceed with having his gallbladder removed. It’s typically a fairly common and easy procedure with a rapid heal time. Well, this was not the case for my child. He had many complications. My son ended up being sent from Rockford, IL to Madison, WI. He ended up hospitalized for 2 weeks, missing school and I was missing work.

At this time, 3 things happened. First, I realized there are many parents who experience what I went through, but are not fortunate to have a medical background to understand what was happening. I am grateful that being an experienced nurse I was able to communicate with the staff. Secondly, I appreciated as an entrepreneur I had the flexibility to miss work, but it was still a financial strain. I had to use money for gas, eating, buying necessities while staying at the hospital and I still had three other children at home that I had to provide for as well. Not to mention, my youngest son ended up in the hospital the same weekend in a totally different hospital and across stateline from where his brother was hospitalized. Lastly, I realized that parents need more resources during these types of experiences. This is why Iconic Nurse Network Outreach, INC was created.

On February 11th, 1998, I returned home from school to learn that my 32-year-old mother had passed away from a severe asthma attack that sent her into cardiac arrest. At the time, me being only 4 months from my sweet 16 birthday, I had no knowledge of how her life could have possibly been saved. Now, as a 20-year experienced nurse, I feel something as simple as at least one household member knowing CPR could have saved her life. It is a great part of Iconic Nurse Network Outreach, INC to provide CPR classes starting with students even in kindergarten, so that every household can have at least 1 person skilled in CPR. It sounds cliché, but each one teach one!

    Project: Nurse H.O.P.E.S.

Nurse H.O.P.E.S. which stands for Helping Out Parents with Education and Support. A program started to help support parents during a critical time in their lives. I remember being at my son's bedside in a hospital for 2 weeks. I observed many parents who were not able to stay at their child's bedside, but parents who have jobs and other children making a necessary sacrifice. I remembered not knowing how long the stay would be. Each complication post surgery improved in its own time. I had to shop every few days for food and clothes. As I am grateful for the gas cards I received, $20 once a week was not enough to travel from Madison, Wisconsin to Rockford, Illinois.

Not to mention, if I was not a nurse I wonder if I would have known the right questions to ask. I wondered if I would understand what was happening to my child? I am a nurse and I still had to ask questions and get clarifications.

Nurse H.O.P.E.S. is the resource to help parents with the minor things, so that parents can focus on the major thing....their child's health. We also support parents by helping to explain what they may not understand medically. We do not diagnose and we do not give medical advice.
